Prescribing and fabricating splints for the small hands of children is challenging due to various conditions as well as the children’s inability to cooperate and understand instructions. In order to strengthen the clinical reasoning process and practical skills of OT colleagues in fabricating different types of splints for children with physical handicap, this full-day workshop with use of case study illustrations is specially designed.
Course objectives:
1. Recognize the role and familiarize with the therapeutic approaches of splinting in pediatric occupational therapy
2. Evaluate the needs of splinting and its prescription with a structured algorithm
3. Understand how procedural play assists in splint making
4. Analyze the considerations of splint prescription for children of different age groups and disabilities
5. Design and prescribe suitable splints for children to improve their hand functions and prevent deformities with hands-on practice
